14 european nations carved up Africa amongst themselves
(1st Break)
Within the context of our Identity crisis, I want to invite you to look up the Berlin Conference of 1884-85. Of course, some of you are well familiar with the Berlin Conference, however, I’m never surprised when I talk with someone who has never heard of it.
The Berlin Conference was a gathering of 14 european nations to decide how they would carve up Africa amongst themselves to satisfy their imperialist agendas. They took three months to do it, without the participation of Africans themselves, to draw up arbitrary borders ultimately creating 50 separate nations, not states, but separate countries, all on one continent, with no regard for the historical, cultural or blood ties of our Ancestors. Overnight, entire villages of thousands if not hundreds of thousands were split and forced to view family members just on the other side of these newly imposed “borders” as an entirely different nation of people.
No regard for the historical, cultural or blood ties of our Ancestors
The new colonial “countries” were also given new names. And with these names came a new, yet false, national identity and consciousness. The African cultures, traditions, and philosophies that informed our past and guided our development into the future was once again brutally interrupted to make room, this time, for the economic and geo-political philosophy and agenda of European Imperialism. It was and continues to be through psychological warfare i.e., colonial education, media propaganda, and religious institutions that they have conditioned us to abandon our own African perspective in favor of their hostile anti-African European world view.
New names came with a new, yet false, national identity and consciousness
Now, it’s important to note that some of the colonizers who participated in the Berlin Conference, are the exact same invaders who more than 3 centuries earlier controlled the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, that dispersed our Ancestors throughout the world into their stolen colonial territories. Those Ancestors also suffered the humiliation of having the false names and national identity of their enslavers imposed on them. The same names and identities that we ourselves, the diaspora, proudly boast of today. More…when we come to another stop fam.
We accept colonial definitions without criticism or resistance
(2nd Break)
Now getting back to the discussion on Identity, here we are 135 years after the Berlin Conference, after the devastation of slavery, settler colonialism, black codes, apartheid, neocolonialism, and segregation, and for the majority of us, we still define ourselves, without criticism or resistance, according to the names, borders and philosophy imposed on us by colonizers.
And what does this all mean Maitho?
look, It is upon land that the foundation of Nationhood rest. With land, and the resources thereof, a nation can independently develop the infrastructure needed to insure the health and well being of its people. I.e., institutions of agriculture, energy, science, technology, education, health, and defense.
It is upon land that the foundation of Nationhood rest
Ownership and control of land and resources also ensures your ability to protect and nurture your culture your traditions, your spiritual systems, your politics, and your philosophy…which in turn, informs your national consciousness…and ultimately demands your allegiance and sacrifice.
1.5 Billion People & 12 Million square miles of land
Right now, we have two hundred million of our people scattered across the globe or what we call the Diaspora. The remaining 1.3 billion of us live on the continent. That’s one and half billion people family. Our Ancestral homeland is 12 million square miles…rich in natural resources both human and minerals. Yet, despite having this capital, along with the skills and knowledge that we’ve acquired, we’ve failed to organize ourselves into a collective movement towards the acquisition of power, taking back our continent, our resources and creating a reality for ourselves and our children that respects and protects our humanity.
We view the world through the eyes of a false national consciousness
And one major reason for this is, is that we continue to view the world through the eyes of a false national consciousness. We see ourselves as African Americans, Black Brits, West Indians, Ghanaians, Kenyans etc., before we see ourselves as simply Africans. Then we split our allegiance even further into narrow minded sub cultures centered around religion, gender, urban culture, identity politics etc., which makes it extremely easy for our enemies to keep us preoccupied fighting these silly battles that only further divides us and never leads to our collective nation obtaining power.
Liberation and Black Power. In our lifetime!
